COUGAR DIAMOND SUMMARY


The Washington State baseball team, coming off a split of four games against Portland last weekend, prepares this week for another four-game set, but the location will be a little more tropical for the Cougars.

Thursday the Cougars, 5-5, take on the Hawai'i Warriors at Honolulu. Games Thursday, Friday and Saturday begin at 8:30 p.m. Pacific Time, while Sunday's finale starts at 3:00 p.m. at Rainbow Stadium.

The Cougars captured bookend victories over Portland, with Jimmy Freeman beating the Pilots 4-1 Friday and Wayne Daman Jr. shutting down Portland 5-1 Sunday. The Pilots captured both games Saturday, 10-5 and 10-6. All four games were played at Dust Devil Stadium in Pasco as part of the annual Larry Barnes Classic.

Daman Jr. leads Cougar starters on the mound with a 1.29 ERA and a 1-0 record. He has thrown 14.0 innings and struck out 10. Freeman has a 1.42 ERA and has worked the most innings, 19.0, and posted the most strikeouts, 21.

Honolulu native, Zach McAngus is pacing WSU batters, hitting .415 with a team leading 17 hits and 11 runs scored. Jay Miller is hitting .325, followed by Zach Kosturos at .308 and Brady Everett at .306. Everett is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, going 8-for-20 in his last five appearances with four RBI.

Daman Jr. was nearly un-hittable against Portland, taking a no-hitter into the eighth before the Pilots got their only hit off him, a leadoff double. He worked eight innings and struck out seven. Freeman also had a strong outing, throwing seven innings and allowing two hits and one run.

Zach Kosturos led WSU offensively against Portland, hitting .400 (6-for-15) in the four games. He had one double and two triples. Jeff Miller hit .357 (5-for-14), Brady Everett .333 (4-for-12) and Matthew Thomas .300 (3-for-10). As a team, WSU hit .292 to boost the team average to .285 after 10 games.

WSU VS. HAWAI'I: The following is a statistical comparison of how Washington State matches up against this weeks' opponent, the Hawai'i Warriors:


WSU VS. HAWAI'I AND THE WAC: WSU is 9-17-0 against Hawai'i...the last time the Cougars played the Warriors was 1996 in a three-game series at Honolulu...Hawai'i took the series 2-1, but the Cougars won the final game 14-0...WSU is 38-42-0 against Western Athletic Conference opponents...the Cougs have six shutouts under their belts, but have also been scoreless six times against WAC opposition.


STEPPING UP TO BAT: WSU's .285 team batting average is the fifth best among Conference of Champions teams and its .396 on-base-percentage is third... five Cougars are hitting .300 or better this season, including four starters...leading WSU regulars is Zach McAngus who is hitting .415...he leads WSU regulars with 17 hits, 11 runs scored, and 22 total bases...Jay Miller is second, hitting .325 overall, scoring five runs...he is tied with McAngus and brother Jeff for second place on the team in RBI with nine...Zach Kosturos led Cougar hitters against Portland, batting .400 in the four-game series...the designated hitter is batting .308 overall, recording six of his eight hits last weekend...he is the only Cougar to hit a triple, hitting two against the Pilots...Kosturos and Brady Everett have three doubles, placing them in a tie for first...Everett is batting .306 overall after going 4-for-12 against the Pilots...he is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, going 8-for-20 with four RBI in his last five starts...the slugger leads the team with 11 RBI and two home runs...although they are hitting below .300 overall, Jeff Miller, Kaeo Rubin and Matt Thomas all hit .300 or better last weekend...Jeff Miller hit .357 against Portland, going 5-for-14 with one double and three RBI...Rubin, who was the third-best WSU hitter in 2004, went 5-for-15 and Thomas hit .300, scoring once and driving home one run.


FANNING THE COMPETITION: Cougar pitchers are boasting a 4.67 overall ERA and have recorded 51 strikeouts...four hurlers, including two starters, have an ERA below 1.50...Wayne Daman Jr.'s 1.29 ERA leads Cougar regulars...he is 1-0 with one save, throwing 14.0 innings and striking out 10...against the Pilots he threw seven hitless innings before allowing just one hit in the eighth...he faced 25 batters, walking two, while striking out seven Pilots...Jimmy Freeman (2-0) has thrown the most innings for WSU (19.0) and has the most strikeouts (21)...Cougars are 3-0 when Freeman starts...Steve Kost and Eric Dingwall are boasting 0.00 ERAs...Kost has allowed three hits over 3.0 innings in two appearances...Dingwall has thrown 1.0 inning and not allowed a hit...co-captain Dane Renkert leads the bullpen with five appearances, recording two saves...the closer has struck out eight batters in 11.1 innings of work.


OFF TO A GOOD START: The Washington State baseball team has won the first game of every series it has played this season...not since 1999 has a Cougar team taken the first game of each series in the first three weeks of the season...the 1999 squad finished 24-31 overall... WSU is 2-0 when it scores first, scores in the first inning and/or is in the lead after the first...the Cougars are 3-0 when Jimmy Freeman starts on the mound...WSU is 4-0 when Jimmy Murphy hits in the seven spot and 2-0 when Brady Everett hits fifth in the order.


EXTRA BASE HITS: There are eight Cougars who have recorded extra base hits this season...Zach Kosturos and Brady Everett lead the team with five extra base hits...each has three doubles, which also leads the team...Kosturos has two triples, while Everett has two home runs to lead the team...Zach McAngus and Jeff Miller each have hit two doubles, while Zach Franklin and Nick Hall each have one two-base hit...McAngus, Jay Miller and Matt Thomas have each cleared the fence once this season.


McANGUS IS HOT HEADING HOME: Zach McAngus is returning to his home state of Hawaii this weekend...currently leads the team in hitting at .415...starting third baseman leads the team in hits, 17, runs, 11, and total bases, 22... tied for second in RBI with nine...McAngus is hitting .500 with runners in scoring position and is 3-for-3 scoring a runner from third with less than two outs...he also is successful at advancing runners 61.9 percent of the time.


IN THE CLUTCH: Five Cougars are hitting .300 or better with runners on base, including Jay Miller, who is hitting .409 to lead the team...Zach McAngus is batting .389 with runners on, while both Garrett Kimbrel and Jimmy Murphy are hitting .333 with men on base and Brady Everett is hitting .318...Everett is 1-for-1 with the bases loaded, hitting a grand slam against Sacramento State Feb. 4...both Jay and Jeff Miller are hitting .333 with the bases loaded...Jay Miller and Kimbrel are batting .500 with runners in scoring position 50 percent of the time, while Everett and Murphy are hitting .333...five Cougars, including Everett, Zach Franklin, Zach Kosturos, McAngus and Scott Suttmeier are plating runners 100 percent of the time when there is a runner on third and less than two outs...Franklin, Kyle Henselman and Kimbrel have each gone 1-for-1 when hitting in a two outs, runner on third situation.


FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS: The freshman class has been making an impact this season with 11 newcomers seeing playing time...seven rookies have played on the field and four have seen mound time...both the first base and shortstop positions are occupied by freshmen...Jim Murphy, and Nick Hall both made starts at first base...Matt Thomas has started nine games at shortstop...Scott Suttmeier has made starts at short and second base...freshmen have tallied 17 of WSU's 96 hits...they've scored 10 of the Cougars' 63 runs and driven home nine...four newcomers have pitched for the Cougars, working 26.0 out of 88.2 innings...Jayson Miller is sixth on the team with a 4.61 ERA over 13.2 innings...Matt Oye has five strikeouts this season...Dustin Willis is 1-0 with four punch outs this year...there are 13 freshmen on the WSU roster and all hail from Washington.


MARBUT IN GOOD COMPANY: Don Marbut is the ninth WSU head coach to win his first baseball game as a Cougar and the first since Bobo Brayton beat Gonzaga 9-4 March 22, 1962, beginning his illustrious 33-year WSU career...Marbut beat Sacramento State 8-7 to open his WSU career...the eight other WSU head coaches who won their first games are Jack Friel (1943), Arthur "Buck" Bailey (1927), Harry Applequist (1923), Frank Barber (1921), J.R. Bender (1907), Everett Sweeley (1905) and J.N. Ashmore (1904).


IMPROVEMENT EARNS NATIONAL RANKING: Between the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the Cougars were the 15th most improved team in the nation...in 2003 WSU finished the season with an 19-37 overall record...in 2004 it finished the season 29-26...the Cougars improved 10.5 games in 2004...the most improved team in the nation following the 2004 season was Prairie View, which improved its final record by 19.5 games.


EXTRA INNINGS FIRST SINCE 1975: The 10-inning opening game of the 2005 WSU baseball season against Sacramento State Friday, February 4, was the first time since 1975 a Cougar team has played extra innings in its first outing of the season...the Cougars took Lewis-Clark State into the 10th inning before losing 7-6 March 2, 1975.


PAC-10 TEAMS RANK AMONG BEST: Four of WSU's conference opponents are ranked in the top 25 in both the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper polls...Stanford dropped from sixth in both polls to 11th in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and 13th in Baseball America...Arizona is the top-ranked Pac-10 school placing ninth in Baseball America and 10th in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper...USC is 15th in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, but 22nd in Baseball America, which ranks Washington 19th


ON THE ROAD AGAIN: During the first five weeks of the 2005 season, the Cougars will play 18 games in five different states...WSU started the season in California, taking one game in the series against Sacramento State...the Cougars went 2-1 in the Pelican State, taking their first two games against Southeastern Louisiana...in Pasco, the Cougars split the series 2-2 against Portland...this week they travel to starting third baseman Zach McAngus' home state of Hawai'i to face off against the Warriors...they will finish their road-trip series in Lewiston, Idaho for the annual Banana Belt Tournament beginning March 3...in the first five weeks the Cougars will travel roughly 16,000 miles round trip...the last time the Cougars traveled to five states in the first five weeks was in 2000 when they traveled roughly 10,000 miles.


TOUGH SCHEDULE: The Cougars will face six teams that played in the post-season last year...five conference foes, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, UCLA and Washington, all made a regional appearance, with the Wildcats making it to the College World Series...Lewis-Clark State made it to the NAIA World Series.


COUGS HIT FIELD EARLY: In past years Washington State was limited in early-season outdoor practice time, but with WSU's new FieldTurf baseball diamond, Cougar players have been enjoying mild weather while holding intrasquad games and practices outdoors since the middle of January. "We have been on our new field every day since January 19," says Donnie Marbut.


THE WASHINGTON CONNECTION: The 2005 Washington State team consists of 31 Washington natives including head coach Donnie Marbut and associate coach Travis Jewett...four Cougar players hail from Bellevue...Kennewick, Woodinville and Spokane are each home to a pair of players...other Washington cities that made the Cougar geographic roster are Beaver, Bellingham, Burien, Des Moines, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Issaquah, Longview, Moses Lake, Olympia, Renton, Richland, Sammamish, Spanaway, Tacoma, Vancouver and Walla Walla...Marbut is a Aberdeen native and Jewett calls Tacoma home.


2005 CAPTAINS: The 2005 Washington State baseball captains are senior Dane Renkert and redshirt juniors Zach Kosturos and Zach Franklin.


THE EDMONDS CC CONNECTION: Four current Cougars played for WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut during his tenure as head coach at Edmonds Community College...former Tritons new to the squad this year are Eric Dingwall and Brady Everett...Kaeo Rubin and Zach Kosturos both played under Marbut at Edmonds before coming to WSU last season...all four players won a NWAACC Championship under Marbut.


NO GAPS IN COUGAR OUTFIELD: Starting in the Washington State outfield are junior Jay Miller and seniors Jason Freeman and Kaeo Rubin...the three led the team in hitting last season with Miller edging out Freeman for first, .355 to .344...Rubin was third with a .341 batting average...all three earned Pac-10 honorable mention accolades...Miller also earned all-academic honorable mention kudos...Freeman played second base last season but this season has returned to his natural position in the outfield.


AN ALL NEW PLAYING FIELD: WSU is one of the few colleges in the nation to play on an artificial surface baseball field...in 2004 the Cougars became the first NCAA Division I team to have FieldTurf as its playing surface...WSU joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Minnesota Twins as part of the exclusive group of baseball teams to use FieldTurf as their playing field...the Cougar baseball diamond is ringed with a brownish red warning track and includes base paths of the same color...the only dirt on WSU's baseball field is the pitching mound and around home plate...included in the renovation project completed before the 2004 season were new dugouts for both teams.


COUGAR BASEBALL RANKS SEVENTH IN ALL-TIME NCAA VICTORIES: Washington State University is ranked seventh in all-time NCAA Division I baseball victories with 2,330 at the end of the 2004 season...a list of the top seven baseball programs appears below with their respective records and number of seasons played through 2004:

Where's Rainbow Stadium? I thought it was call Les Murakami Stadium?
